I probably won't quote Juvenile very often, but he was right when he said ...
"Back That A$$ Up"
"CYA (Cover your A$$)"
You probably wondering where I am going with this...
As we enter New Jobs or as we Grow within our Existing Jobs there will be times when:
- We will try to stretch the limits of what is asked
- Try to make moves to impress management
- Get lazy and cut corners
- Forget procedures
- try to take on a new responsibility and don't full understand what needs to be done
Let's break this down:
Trying to Impress Management
Your probably thinking, "Let me do this ONE THING to impress my boss and he will love it!
Great Idea!
But many times management will first want to see results(instantly) and also make sure you followed procedure(each company it's different, but make sure you can support that you did follow proper protocol).
- Document your idea/project
- Try to demonstrate how it will impact the business
- Make sure you have covered all angles and it will not blow up in your face
Try to Avoid:
- Cutting Corners
It never pays off! You always find yourself having to explain why you did so even if its after the 50th time you did it. You eventually do get caught.
- Getting extremely Lazy
I think we have all found ourselves in this position and wanted to make sure we "CYA"
Well, make sure your careful who you ask because if you ask the wrong person they may rattle off and let management know your not aware of the procedures.
But, 9/10...
You are better off asking a co-worker or simply asking the person in charge(your boss)
Explain that you did not want to deviate from company protocol and you needed to verify the correct procedure.
Just make sure that your Covering yourself here so they don't think your just forgetful of importance rules.
----------------------------------
At the End of the Day:
We are all human and we will forget certain procedures or will make moves to grow within our respected company but its important that:
We Cover our A$$
If you don't look out for yourself, 9/10 nobody else will.
With this being sad, Don't be afraid to take risks or effect change within a company.
