When is it time to Quit a Job?

The Quest to finding the perfect job seems to be a job within its self. Some of us have been fortunate enough to find that one job where everything seems to align... Great Team, Environment, Money and Location. But let’s face it, the chances of this happening your first time at bat are slim to none. lol

So this begs the questions, when is it time to move on?!

We all have those days where we are fed up with our jobs and can’t wait til the time hits 5 o’clock, but does that mean it’s time to hit the road jack?

Depends... A lot of us allow the stress to mount and never vocalize it (sometimes this option doesn’t matter) which in turn just makes everyday torture. On the other hand, a lot of us turn a small issue into World War 3 and want everyone to know how they feel and demand everything been changed ASAP. (Probably won’t happen unless you pay the bills)

Indications to Quit/Move on: This truly will vary based on your current occupation, but it typically is pretty consistent.
  • You come home everyday with a chip on your shoulder with the restless notion that you have to go back tomorrow.
  • You find yourself angry on the way to work... Dreading the day ahead.
  • Every interaction with your boss you find yourself on edge or ready for them to make an offensive statement so you can bounce back with one of your own.
  • You clock watch... waiting for the day to end while internally your thinking you can’t wait to get the heck out of there.
  • You find yourself ready to take an abusive rollercoaster from your co-workers
  • Your boss constantly demines your race, gender, attributes, and work ethic.
  • The list truly can go on…

**Red Flags:
  • Abusive Relationships: Its time to take a look at the Softer side of Sears and venture down the road of Abusive Relationships at work. Many of us become accustomed to the harassment as we feel if we speak up it may cost us our jobs…Does this make it a conducive working environment? No Way Jose!

But…Do not be afraid to speak up and make sure that the offender knows how you feel. Easier said then done of course as this may cost you your job, so make sure you choose your battles, but we all have that breaking point. Just make sure this is done in a professional manner. If that does not help … lets face the reality of the situation…

The Reality: The Job Market is terrible. So proactively begin looking for a job. Reach out to your contacts and let them know you’re in the hunt of a new job. Do this respectively as you do not want to step on any toes (aka which can lead back to your current employer). Begin saving up some funds and making wiser decisions financially as there may be a grace period when you transition from one job to another. (Better safe than sorry) Update your resume with your latest position and make sure everything accurate and professional.

Wrap-up: Knowing when to call it quits is never easy as we build a foundation at every job we are at. It is important to weigh out the negative with the positive in order to decide if it is time to move on. You will face tough decision, possibly obstacles, but there is no price on stability and sanity. There is never a good time to make that leap, but there is always room to prepare for your next move.

Hope this helps some of you folks deliberating to move on or not.
